The lighthouse Le Phare des Baleines

Whale Lighthouse (Le phare des Baleines), an unmissable visit on Ile de Ré

Situated on the north-west tip of the island, Whale Lighthouse was built between 1849 and 1853 by Léonce Reynaud, a French architect and engineer.  The lighthouse was built to replace the first tower constructed by Vauban in 1682. Whale Lighthouse is aligned with the Baleineaux lighthouse, which is smaller, 3 kms along the coast.

It is named Whale Lighthouse because a large number of whales are washed up at this part of the island.  The old tower is classed as a historic monument.

The lighthouse is open to the public. To enjoy the exceptional view over the Ile de Ré and the ocean, we challenge you to climb the 257 steps which take you to the top of the tower!

It is one of the most impressive lighthouses in France, at 57 metres high.

At the foot of the Baleineaux lighthouse, a museum and bookshop are there to tell you more about lighthouses and their function.

The interactive exhibit in the museum offers illustrations and explanations about lighthouses and navigational markings, so you can learn all about this centuries-old system.
