Rivedoux-Plage in a few words...
Rivedoux-Plage is the first village you encounter when you arrive on Ile de Ré, but it only officially became a commune in its own right in 1928, after gaining independence from Ste-Marie-de-Ré, the neighbouring village.
The village is between the Breton strait to its north (the Vendée side) and the Antioche strait (La Rochelle side) to the south.
A cycle path following directly on from the bridge runs along the northern side and Rivedoux's bay.
This wide bay, decorated with its little marina, offers an unspoilt view of Ile de Ré's bridge.
On the southern side, there's a large sandy beach where families meet for swimming, games, nautical activities or to have a drink.
Rivedoux is a very lively village: various cultural and artistic events take place throughout the year.
The draw of this little village is significant; the development of the economy and local facilities, in particular the covered market which has been installed in the village centre and the long esplanade with views of the sea, have seen the population grow from 460 inhabitants in 1930 to 2374 in 2021.
Located offshore from Rivedoux, the Chauveau lighthouse was one of the first lighthouses to be built out at sea. Around 30 metres tall, it has a range of 15 miles. The areas around the Chauveau lighthouse are also highly prized by shore fishermen who flock there during the spring tides.
And whilst we're on the subject of molluscs, Rivedoux is the biggest oyster-producing village of Ile de Ré; its oyster farms can be seen on the way to La Flotte. Some of the oyster farmers offer guided tours, on the back of their tractor, with a well-deserved oyster tasting session afterwards.
